Introducing Broker vs Account-Holding Broker: Why the Legal Structure Matters

Understand the difference between an introducing broker and the firm that opens, holds and services a brokerage account.

Tickmill UK’s new Interactive Brokers multi-asset offering provides a practical example of a split-role brokerage relationship. The client journey can feel unified while legal and operational responsibilities remain divided.

Key facts

  • Tickmill said it acts as introducing broker.
  • Accounts are opened with and held by Interactive Brokers (U.K.) Limited.
  • Support, execution, custody and complaints may involve different firms.
  • The client should retain both sets of disclosures.

Two roles inside one customer journey

An introducing broker typically brings the client into a service and may support onboarding or the ongoing relationship. The account-holding broker contracts with the client for the brokerage account and may provide custody, execution, statements and platform access.

The exact division depends on the agreement. Titles alone are not enough; the disclosure should identify each firm’s regulated role and what happens when a client needs support or redress.

The Tickmill–Interactive Brokers example

Tickmill UK announced that its new multi-asset clients would be supported by Tickmill while accounts were opened with and held by Interactive Brokers (U.K.) Limited. The offering combines Tickmill’s client journey with IBKR infrastructure and a broad product list.

That makes it a useful case study in reading beyond the front-end brand. The client should know which terms govern custody, platform permissions, pricing and complaints.

What clients should verify

Role clarity becomes most important when something goes wrong: a transfer is delayed, an order is disputed or a complaint needs escalation.

  • Identify the firm named on cash and securities statements.
  • Check which entity executes each product.
  • Record support and complaints contacts for both roles.
  • Compare the fees charged by each party or embedded in the service.
  • Confirm whether ending one relationship also closes the underlying account.

SafeGate perspective and limitations

Split-role models can combine specialist support with broad infrastructure. They are not inherently safer or riskier than a single-firm model. Transparency determines whether clients can understand and use the arrangement effectively.

SafeGate should describe the structure in broker reviews and avoid attributing another firm’s custody or execution responsibilities to the introducing brand.
